I use a Shop Fox W1727 dust collector and it only took one time emptying the bag to realize I didn’t want to do it often. I decided to try the WoodRiver Trash Can Cyclone Lid with a regular trash can to avoid quickly filling the bag on the dust collector.

Setting up the trash can with the cyclone lid simply involves attaching a 90° elbow to the underside of the lid and placing the lid on the trash can.

I have used the cyclone lid with my jointer, planer, table saw, and band saw. I don’t notice any loss of air flow with the separator in place, and it does a great job collecting all the large debris so only the finer dust makes its way to the dust collector bag.

Prior to using the separator, the W1727 would become clogged when using my Shop Fox W1812 planer/molder because larger shavings would hang on the grill where debris enters the impeller. Since only the dust gets this far, it’s no longer a problem. However, larger shavings will accumulate to one side of the trash can and will eventually block the air flow before the trash can is actually full. This means I need to keep an eye on the contents of the trash can and occasionally redistribute the waste, otherwise, a big mess accumulates in the planer that can jam it up.

Dumping the trash can is a much easier experience than emptying the dust collector bag, and so far I have not had occasion to empty that bag a second time.
